The smoke-free policy will be effective for all residents, household members, employees, guests, and service persons on July 30, 2018.
In addition to Public Housing communities becoming smoke-free, smoking will also be prohibited in outdoor areas within 25 feet from public housing and administrative office buildings.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development published a Final Rule Instituting Smoke-Free Public Housing in December 2016, which is available in the Federal Register here.
With this Final Rule in effect for Public Housing, HUD expects to improve indoor air quality in public housing; benefit the health of public housing residents, visitors, and PHA staff; reduce the risk of catastrophic fires; and lower overall maintenance costs.
Information for Residents provided by HUD is available here.
